Instant Transfer Fees, Compared

DISCLOSURESome links earn us a commission. It never changes what we recommend or what you pay.
A phone showing a transfer-to-bank screen: an instant option costing $3.75 selected, and a free standard option arriving in one to three business days.
The same money, two speeds. On $250, the instant option here costs 1.5%.

Every payment app will move your balance to your bank account free of charge in one to three business days, or immediately for a percentage of the amount. That percentage is one of the more profitable lines in consumer finance, because the alternative is waiting and people are impatient.

The fee is small in absolute terms and large as an interest rate, which is the useful way to look at it.

Fees checked 20 Sep 2026. These are percentage fees with a floor and, in most cases, a ceiling. Every provider revises them; confirm on the app’s own fee page.

The fee as an interest rate

A 1.75% fee to get money two days early is, annualised, a rate in the hundreds of percent. Nobody would take a loan on those terms, and that is effectively the trade: you are paying for two days of access to money you already own.

In dollars it looks harmless. $2.63 on a $150 transfer, $8.75 on $500. Paid twice a month, it is $60 to $200 a year for a service that has a free version.

When paying is rational

There are real cases. Rent is due tomorrow and the money is in the app. An overdraft fee of $35 is otherwise coming. A bill will go to collections. In each, the instant fee is smaller than the consequence of waiting, and you should pay it without a second thought.

What is not rational is paying it habitually because the button is there.

Four ways around it

  • Ask to be paid by Zelle instead. Bank to bank in minutes, free, no second step. See Cash App vs Zelle.
  • Spend from the app's card. If the app issues a debit card, the balance is already spendable — no transfer needed.
  • Transfer on a weekday morning. A standard transfer started Monday morning often lands Tuesday. Started Friday afternoon, it lands Tuesday as well. The delay is business days, not elapsed days.
  • Keep a small buffer in checking. The cheapest fix: $200 of slack means you never need the money today.

Why standard transfers take so long

Because ACH settles in batches on business days, and does not run on weekends or federal holidays. Same-day ACH exists and many banks support it, but whether your app uses it is its choice, not yours. Full explanation on what ACH is.

The other cost of moving money: sending with a credit card. App comparisons: Venmo vs Cash App, PayPal vs Venmo, best money transfer apps.

Common questions

Why does a standard transfer take three days?

It runs over ACH, which settles in batches on business days only. A transfer started Friday afternoon typically lands the following Tuesday.

Is the instant transfer fee ever worth paying?

When the cost of waiting is larger — an overdraft fee, a late rent payment, a bill heading to collections. Not as a habit.

Does Zelle charge for instant transfers?

No. Zelle moves money between bank accounts directly, so there is no balance to move afterwards and nothing to pay for.

Can I cancel an instant transfer?

No. It is complete within moments and there is no window to reverse it. The fee is not refunded if you sent it to the wrong account.
