Bank Holidays 2027: Every Date Banks Are Closed

Banks in the United States close on federal holidays, and 2027 has eleven of them. But only nine actually close a bank, because two fall on a Saturday — and the Federal Reserve treats a Saturday holiday differently from the way the federal government does.

The Saturday rule

This is where published calendars disagree with each other, and most of them are wrong.

When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, federal government offices close on the preceding Friday. The Federal Reserve does not. It stays open on that Friday, which means the banking system stays open, which means your bank does too.

When a holiday falls on a Sunday, both shift forward to the Monday, and banks are closed.

So in 2027 you can bank on Christmas Eve and on the Friday before Juneteenth. Branch hours may be shortened at the manager's discretion, but the system is running.

What actually stops on a holiday

A federal holiday is not a business day. That single fact drives everything:

• ACH transfers do not process. Direct deposits, bill payments and bank-to-bank transfers all wait.
• Wires do not move. The Fedwire system is closed.
• Checks do not clear. The availability clock stops, so a check deposited before a holiday weekend can take until Tuesday.
• Branches are shut, including drive-throughs.

What keeps working: debit and credit cards, ATMs, mobile apps, online banking, Zelle and most instant-payment services. You can move money inside your own bank and spend it anywhere. What you cannot do is move it between institutions.

The dates worth planning around

Three clusters in 2027 create genuinely long gaps:

• New Year's Day, Friday January 1. Combined with the weekend, the system is down from Thursday evening to Monday morning.
• Independence Day, observed Monday July 5. A three-day gap on top of the weekend.
• Thanksgiving, Thursday November 25. Banks reopen Friday, but volumes are low and many transfers submitted Wednesday will not land until Monday.

If rent or a loan payment falls on one of these, submit it two business days early. The payment is late when it arrives, not when you sent it.
