Best No Annual Fee Credit Cards
A no-annual-fee card costs nothing to keep open, which makes it the best first card, the best backup card and the easiest card to keep for years. Keeping it open also helps your credit history and utilization. The right one depends on what you want from it.

When an annual fee is worth paying
Only when the extra rewards or benefits clearly exceed the fee for how you actually spend. For most beginners that's not the case. A no-fee 2% card is hard to beat until you spend a lot on travel or groceries.
Keep old no-fee cards open
Closing a card lowers your total available credit, which raises your utilization, and eventually shortens your credit history. Since a no-fee card costs nothing, put a small recurring charge on it and keep it open. Issuers can close cards that are never used.
FAQ
Can I switch a fee card to a no-fee card? Often, yes, within the same issuer. That keeps your account history, and it doesn't need a new application.
Are no-fee cards harder to get? No. Many are available with good credit, and some with fair credit.
