Best Balance Transfer Credit Cards

DISCLOSURESome links earn us a commission. It never affects what we recommend — see how we test.

The best balance transfer card is the one with a 0% intro period long enough for you to pay off the whole balance. After that, compare the transfer fee, usually 3–5% of the amount you move. A longer period with a higher fee usually beats a shorter one, unless you're sure you can clear the balance quickly. For how transfers work, see how balance transfers work.

Most cards require the transfer to be made within a set time after opening, often 60–120 days, to get the intro rate.

Monthly payment to clear it in time

$5,000$150$343$286$245

If you can't reach that payment, a longer intro period matters more than a lower fee. Or a consolidation loan may be safer, since it has no rate jump at the end.

Choosing one

  1. Work out the monthly payment you can afford.
  2. Pick the shortest intro period that works at that payment, then the lowest fee.
  3. Check the limit. You won't know it until approval, and it may be less than your balance.
  4. Don't use the card for new purchases, unless purchases are also 0%.
  5. Set up autopay. A late payment can end the 0% early. See what happens if you miss a payment.
