What a Crypto IRA Actually Costs
A crypto IRA is more expensive than any ordinary retirement account, and the gap is wide enough to change whether the tax shelter is worth having. The costs arrive in three layers, and providers do not present them the same way.
The three layers
| Layer | What it is | Why it matters |
| Setup fee | One-off charge to open the account | Painful on a small balance, irrelevant on a large one |
| Annual or custody fee | Flat sum, or a percentage of assets | Flat fees punish small balances; percentage fees punish large ones |
| Trading fee | A percentage of each buy and sell | The one that compounds, and the one most often understated |
The trading fee is the real number
Crypto IRA providers commonly charge a percentage on every transaction — often several times what a mainstream exchange charges for the same trade. On a buy-and-hold position that is a one-time drag. If you trade, it is the dominant cost of the account, and no tax advantage recovers it.
Ask for the figure as a percentage of the trade, not as a headline “no monthly fee” claim. Those are different questions.
What you are paying against
- Spot bitcoin ETF in a normal IRA: no setup, no account fee, a fund expense ratio measured in fractions of a percent.
- Coins on a mainstream exchange, taxable: trading fees only, and you hold the keys.
- Crypto IRA: setup, custody and trading fees, and the custodian holds the keys.
The crypto IRA buys you one thing those alternatives cannot: actual coins inside a tax shelter. Whether that is worth several percent a year is the only question that matters.
Fee schedules in this category move often. Read the current one against your intended balance rather than a review’s figures, including ours. See Bitcoin IRA.
Balance size decides it
A flat $300 annual fee is 3% of $10,000 and 0.3% of $100,000. Below about ten thousand dollars, fixed costs swamp the tax benefit for most people. Above fifty thousand with a long horizon, the arithmetic usually favours the shelter.
Get the schedule in writing before funding. Fee structures in this category change more often than in mainstream brokerage, and the published figure on a comparison site — including this one — is dated the day it was written.

Common questions
How much does a crypto IRA cost?
Typically a setup fee, an annual custody fee that is flat or a percentage of assets, and a trading fee on every buy and sell. The trading percentage is usually the largest cost.
Are crypto IRA fees higher than a normal IRA?
Considerably. A mainstream IRA holding a spot bitcoin ETF charges no account fee and only a fund expense ratio.
At what balance does a crypto IRA make sense?
Fixed fees dominate small balances. Below roughly ten thousand dollars the costs usually outweigh the tax benefit; above fifty thousand with a long horizon they usually do not.
Can I avoid crypto IRA fees?
Only by choosing a different route — a spot bitcoin ETF inside an ordinary IRA, or holding coins in a taxable account.
