Can You Hold Bitcoin in an IRA?

DISCLOSUREWe earn a commission on some links. It never changes what we recommend — see how we test.

Yes. The IRS treats cryptocurrency as property, and retirement accounts can hold property, so bitcoin is permitted inside an IRA. What is not permitted is doing it at Fidelity or Vanguard with a normal account — conventional custodians restrict you to publicly traded securities.

Figures checked 20 Sep 2026. Contribution limits and digital-asset reporting rules change annually. Confirm current numbers on IRS.gov before acting.

A crypto IRA is not a separate account type

This is the first thing to get straight. The IRS has never created a retirement account built for digital assets. “Crypto IRA” describes what an ordinary IRA happens to hold. The structure underneath is a traditional, Roth, SEP or SIMPLE IRA, opened with a self-directed IRA custodian that accepts alternative assets.

That matters because the tax treatment follows the account type, not the coin. A Roth holding bitcoin is taxed like any other Roth.

The rules that actually apply

RuleHow it applies to crypto
Contribution limit$7,500 for 2026, plus $1,100 catch-up at 50 or older — combined across every IRA you own, not per account
Contributions go in as cashYou generally cannot transfer coins from a personal wallet into an IRA. The account buys them
CustodyThe custodian holds the private keys. That is structural, not a preference
WithdrawalsSame as any IRA — penalties before 59½ outside limited exceptions
Moving coins outSending crypto to your own wallet is a distribution, with tax and penalty consequences
RolloversA 401(k) or IRA rollover moves larger sums in without touching the annual cap
IF YOU WANT THE COINS, NOT A FUND

A dedicated crypto IRA provider handles the self-directed custodian and the cold storage as one product, which is the main thing you are paying for. See Bitcoin IRA.

The custody point people miss

Self-custody is the reason many people hold bitcoin at all, and it is exactly what an IRA takes away. The account owns the asset; the custodian holds the keys. Touching those keys yourself risks a prohibited transaction, and the penalty is not a fine — the IRS can treat the entire account as distributed, taxing the full balance at once.

Some providers run a multisig arrangement where you hold a key alongside the qualified custodian. That is the closest thing to co-control inside the rules, and it is still not self-custody.

The simpler route most people should consider first

A spot bitcoin ETF held in an ordinary Roth IRA at a mainstream broker gives price exposure with no self-directed custodian, no setup fee and no annual account fee. You do not own coins, cannot withdraw them, and pay a fund expense ratio.

For someone who wants bitcoin exposure in a retirement account rather than bitcoin itself, that is usually the cheaper and less breakable answer. The self-directed route earns its complexity when you want the actual asset.

The decision: should you put crypto in a retirement account? The cost: what a crypto IRA actually costs. The comparison: crypto IRA vs a taxable account.

Account basics: Roth IRA vs 401(k).

Common questions

Can I hold bitcoin in a Roth IRA?

Yes, through a self-directed Roth IRA with a custodian that accepts digital assets. Qualified withdrawals are then tax-free, including the gains.

Can I transfer bitcoin I already own into an IRA?

Generally no. IRA contributions go in as cash, and the account buys the crypto itself.

Who holds the private keys in a crypto IRA?

The custodian. Holding the keys yourself risks a prohibited transaction, which can cause the IRS to treat the whole account as distributed.

Is a bitcoin ETF in a normal IRA simpler?

Usually yes. A spot bitcoin ETF in an ordinary IRA needs no self-directed custodian and carries no account setup fee, though you own fund shares rather than coins.
