Chase Freedom Flex vs Discover it Cash Back

DISCLOSURESome links earn us a commission. It never affects what we recommend — see how we test.

Both cards pay 5% cash back on categories that rotate each quarter, up to a spending cap, with no annual fee. Discover it is usually worth more in the first year because it matches all the cash back you earn. Chase Freedom Flex earns more year-round thanks to its fixed dining and drugstore categories, and it fits well with other Chase cards. You need to activate categories each quarter on both.

Which to pick

  • Discover it if you want the most in year one and mainly spend in the US.
  • Freedom Flex if you eat out often, already have or plan to get other Chase cards, or might use the card abroad (though it charges a foreign fee, so it's not ideal).
  • Neither if you won't track categories. A 2% flat card earns more for most people. See the best cash back cards.

Getting the most from either

  1. Set a reminder to activate each quarter's categories.
  2. Use the card only in its categories, and a 2% card for everything else.
  3. Watch the cap. Once you reach it, the rate drops to 1%.

FAQ

Can I have both? Yes. Some people use both to cover more categories each quarter. Each application is a hard inquiry.
