How to Send More Than

0,000

DISCLOSURESome links earn us a commission. It never affects what we recommend — see how we test.

Payment apps top out quickly. Zelle, Venmo and Cash App usually cap transfers at a few thousand dollars a day. For a house deposit, a car, a large gift or a business payment, you need a different method.

More detail on each: what is a wire transfer, what is ACH, and the cheapest way to get a cashier's check.

Getting around daily limits

  • Ask your bank to raise the limit. Many will, temporarily, if you call or visit.
  • Start the transfer from the other bank. ACH limits on incoming transfers are sometimes higher than on outgoing ones.
  • Use a wire. Wire limits are usually far higher than ACH limits.
  • Plan ahead. Splitting a legitimate transfer across a few days is fine. The rule below is about cash.

What gets reported

Cash deposits and withdrawals over $10,000. Banks file a Currency Transaction Report (CTR) with FinCEN for cash transactions over $10,000 in a day. It's routine and not an accusation of anything. It applies to physical cash, not to wires or ACH transfers.

Don't split cash to avoid the report. Deliberately breaking cash deposits or withdrawals into smaller amounts to stay under $10,000 is called "structuring," and it's a federal crime even if the money itself is legal.

Wires and ACH are recorded by banks as part of normal record-keeping. There's no special $10,000 report for them.

Tax: gifts

If you're giving the money away, the giver may need to file a gift tax return (Form 709) when a gift to one person exceeds the annual exclusion, which was $19,000 in 2025. Filing rarely means paying tax. It counts against a lifetime exemption of more than $13 million. See how to legally gift money tax-free.

Receiving from abroad: a US person who receives more than $100,000 in gifts from a foreign individual in a year must report it on Form 3520. There's usually no tax, but the penalties for not filing are steep.

Safety: large transfers attract scams

  • Wires can't be reversed. Once sent, the money is almost impossible to recover.
  • Confirm payment instructions by phone, using a number you already have. Real estate wire fraud usually starts with an email that appears to come from the title company, with changed bank details.
  • Never send money to someone you've only met online, or to "unlock" a prize, loan or investment.
  • Be wary of anyone who insists on gift cards, crypto or wires and says it's urgent.

Sending abroad

International transfers over $10,000 cost far less through a specialist service than through a bank. Some services lower their percentage fee on larger amounts. See the cheapest way to send money abroad.

FAQ

Can I send $10,000 with Zelle? Usually not in one go. Most banks limit Zelle to between $500 and $5,000 a day. See what is Zelle.

Will the IRS ask about a large transfer? Moving your own money between your own accounts isn't taxable and doesn't need to be reported. Income and gifts follow their normal rules.

Is a cashier's check safer than a personal check? For the recipient, yes, because the bank guarantees it. Fake cashier's checks are a common scam, though. If you receive one, confirm it with the issuing bank using a number you look up yourself.
