Are Banks Open on Saturday?

Most bank branches in the US are open on Saturday morning and closed by early afternoon. Typical hours run from around 9am to somewhere between noon and 2pm, and a shrinking number of branches do not open at all.

Your own branch is the only authority on this. Hours vary by institution, by individual branch, and by whether the branch sits inside a supermarket. Check the locator on your bank's site rather than trusting any general figure, including the one above.

The more useful question is what a Saturday visit actually gets you, because the branch being open and the banking system being open are two different things.

Saturday is not a banking day

The networks that move money between banks — ACH, Fedwire, the check clearing system — run on business days, and Saturday is not one of them. The Federal Reserve is closed.

So a deposit made on Saturday is accepted, and then waits. Processing begins Monday, or Tuesday when Monday is a federal holiday. Under Regulation CC the availability clock starts on the next business day, which is why a Saturday check deposit can take until midweek to be spendable.

The same applies to a wire you ask for on Saturday, an ACH transfer you schedule, and a payment you expect to receive. Zelle is the exception — it runs every day, including weekends.

What Saturday hours are good for

  • Cash withdrawals and deposits
  • Depositing checks, with the delay above
  • Cashier's checks and money orders
  • Replacing a lost debit card
  • Basic account questions

What usually needs a weekday

  • Anything involving a specialist. Mortgage officers, business bankers and investment advisers generally keep weekday hours even when the lobby is open.
  • Safe deposit box access at many branches.
  • Wires. Some branches will accept the request; it will not send until Monday.
  • Notary service, depending on who is rostered.

If the reason for your visit is a person rather than a transaction, call first.

Lobby hours are not drive-thru hours

Branches with a drive-thru often keep it open longer than the lobby, on Saturdays and on weekday evenings. Bank locators list the two separately and people routinely read the wrong one. ATMs run regardless, and a deposit-taking ATM belonging to your own bank will handle most of what a Saturday teller would.

The rule that closes banks on a Friday

Federal holidays interact with weekends in a way that catches people out, and the Federal Reserve's own schedule states it plainly.

  • Holiday on a Saturday: Federal Reserve Banks are open the preceding Friday. The holiday is not observed on a weekday, so there is no extra closure — but many individual banks close early or shut anyway, so check.
  • Holiday on a Sunday: observed the following Monday, and banks close.

This is the source of the recurring confusion around 4 July. When Independence Day lands on a Saturday, the Fed works the Friday; when it lands on a Sunday, the Monday is lost. Either way the clearing system pauses for the weekend regardless.

Sunday

Almost universally closed. The exceptions are in-store branches inside supermarkets, which sometimes open Sunday for a few hours, and a small number of regional banks. Nothing settles on a Sunday either way.

What the delay means for a deposit: how long a check takes to clear. Ways to avoid the branch: ACH vs wire vs Zelle.

Common questions

Are banks open on Saturday?

Most branches open Saturday morning and close between noon and 2pm, though hours vary by bank and by individual branch and some do not open at all. Check your bank’s branch locator for the specific location.

Do banks process transactions on Saturday?

No. Saturday is not a banking day, and the networks that move money between banks are closed. A deposit made Saturday begins processing on the next business day, usually Monday.

When will a Saturday deposit be available?

The Regulation CC availability clock starts on the next business day, so a check deposited on Saturday is typically partly available Tuesday and fully available Wednesday. A holiday Monday pushes this back a further day.

Are banks open if a holiday falls on a Saturday?

Federal Reserve Banks are open the preceding Friday, and the holiday is not moved to a weekday. Individual banks may still close early on that Friday, so confirm with yours.

Are banks open on Sunday?

Almost never. The exceptions are some in-store branches inside supermarkets and a small number of regional banks, typically for a few hours in the morning.
