Why Did I Get $90 From Social Security?

DISCLOSURESome links earn us a commission. It never affects what we recommend — see how we test.

The $90 deposit is a one-time Medicare Part B premium rebate. It's paid from the Medicare Improvement Fund to help cover October's Part B premium. Social Security sends it because it already handles most people's Part B deductions. It isn't a benefit increase, it isn't the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment, and it won't repeat.

Checked October 12, 2026 against CMS's rebate FAQ.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • The $90 is a one-time Medicare Part B premium rebate from the Medicare Improvement Fund, sent through Social Security.
  • About 20.8 million people in Original Medicare Part B get it automatically.
  • Medicare Advantage members, people who pay IRMAA and people whose Part B is paid by Medicaid are excluded.
  • It's not the 2027 COLA and won't repeat. Paper checks arrive later in October.

Who gets it

About 20.8 million people enrolled in Original Medicare Part B. You don't need to apply.

You don't get it if you:

  • Are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (even if you pay a Part B premium)
  • Pay the higher-income surcharge on Part B (IRMAA)
  • Get help paying Part B through Medicaid or a Medicare Savings Program
  • Live outside the US

When it arrives

How you're paidTiming
Direct depositOn or around October 8, 2026, from Social Security
Paper checkLater in October, from the US Treasury, with the memo "Medicare Improvement Fund Payment; $90 Payment to Offset October Premium"

An email or letter explaining the payment is due in mid-October, so the money may arrive before the explanation. From October 15, you can check on a missing payment by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213.

How it compares to your premium

The standard Part B premium is $202.90 a month in 2026, so $90 covers a bit under half of one month. Your premium after October doesn't change.

Watch for scams

Nobody needs your bank login, a verification code or a fee to "release" this payment. Hang up on anyone who asks, and report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Why so many people didn't get it

About 62.9 million people are enrolled in Part B, but only about a third qualify. The 35 million or so in Medicare Advantage are excluded because their plans are run by private insurers, even though most still pay the Part B premium. People who pay the higher-income surcharge (IRMAA) and people whose premium is already covered by Medicaid or a Medicare Savings Program are also excluded.

How to check whether you got it

  1. Look for a deposit of exactly $90 around October 8 in the account where your Social Security payment goes.
  2. If you don't get Social Security by direct deposit, watch your mail for a US Treasury check later in October with the memo "Medicare Improvement Fund Payment; $90 Payment to Offset October Premium."
  3. Watch for the explanatory email or letter due in mid-October.
  4. From October 15, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 if you think you qualify and haven't been paid.

Is the $90 taxable?

The government hasn't said. Keep the letter or email that explains the payment with your tax records, and check your tax software's guidance or ask a preparer when you file.
