A raise never lowers your take-home pay
Moving into a higher bracket only taxes the extra dollars at the higher rate. Everything below stays taxed as before. A $2,000 raise that crosses from 12% to 22% costs, at most, $440 in extra federal tax.
Using your bracket
- Choosing Roth or traditional. A low bracket now often favors Roth. A high bracket now often favors traditional. See Roth IRA vs 401(k).
- Valuing pre-tax contributions. At 22%, a $1,000 401(k) or HSA contribution saves you $220 in federal tax.
- Costing an early 401(k) withdrawal. See the 401(k) loan vs withdrawal calculator.
Freelancers
If you're self-employed, you also pay self-employment tax (15.3% on most of your net earnings), which this calculator doesn't include. See the variable income budget planner for a tax set-aside.
FAQ
What's the difference between marginal and effective rate? Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar, which is your bracket. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your income, and it's always lower.
