Using ChatGPT for Investment Research
A language model is a strong reading assistant and a weak data source. Almost every useful rule for research follows from that one distinction.
What it does well
- Explaining terminology. Free cash flow, dilution, a lock-up expiry — concepts with stable definitions are exactly what it is good at.
- Summarising a document you supply. Paste a filing section or an annual report and ask for the risk factors in plain language. The source is in front of it, so there is less to invent.
- Generating questions. "What would make this investment thesis wrong?" produces a checklist faster than you would write one.
- Structuring a comparison. Give it your own figures and ask for a table. The arithmetic still needs checking, but the framework is sound.
Where it fails
| Ask | Problem |
| Current share price or market cap | Either stale or fabricated. Use the exchange or your broker |
| Last quarter's revenue | Frequently confident and wrong. Read the filing |
| A fund's expense ratio or holdings | Changes over time; the model may answer from an older version |
| "Should I buy X?" | It has no knowledge of your finances, tax position or timeline, and it is not a licensed adviser |
| Citations for a claim | Sources are sometimes invented. Open every link before relying on it |
A workflow that holds up
- Find the primary document yourself — the filing, the fund page, the rate sheet.
- Give the model the document and ask it to summarise or extract, rather than asking from memory.
- Ask it to list what it could not find in the document. Gaps are more useful than confident answers.
- Verify every number that would change your decision against the source.
- Ask for the bear case explicitly. Left alone, the output leans agreeable.
One caution on inputs
Do not paste account numbers, statements with identifying details, or tax documents. Redact before uploading, and assume anything entered may be retained unless the settings say otherwise.

Common questions
Can ChatGPT give accurate stock prices?
No. Prices and recent financials should come from the exchange, the filing or your broker. A model asked from memory will often answer confidently and wrongly.
What is ChatGPT actually useful for in investing?
Explaining terminology, summarising documents you supply, generating questions to test a thesis, and structuring comparisons from figures you provide.
Should I ask ChatGPT whether to buy a stock?
No. It has no knowledge of your finances, tax position or time horizon, and it is not a licensed adviser.
Is it safe to upload financial statements?
Redact account numbers and identifying details first, and check the data-retention settings before uploading anything sensitive.
