Best Banks for a Joint Checking Account

DISCLOSURESome links earn us a commission. It never affects what we recommend — see how we test.

A joint checking account works best when it is boring: no monthly fee, no minimum, free ATMs, and an app both of you can use. Most good online banks offer this. The differences are in the details, such as whether you can open it together online, whether each person gets their own debit card, and how alerts work.

If you haven't decided whether a joint account is right for you, read how joint bank accounts work first. It covers ownership, insurance and the risks.

What to look for

  • No monthly fee and no minimum balance. Both of you will move money in and out, so the balance will swing.
  • Separate debit cards with separate card numbers, so a lost card doesn't freeze both.
  • Joint application online. Some banks require both owners in a branch.
  • Alerts for both owners on low balances and large payments.
  • Linked joint savings for shared goals.
  • No overdraft fees. When two people spend from one account, overdrafts happen more easily.

Setting it up so it stays fair

Agree on what goes in. Common models: split 50/50, split in proportion to income, or pool everything. Proportional splits tend to feel fairest when incomes differ.

Automate it. Set each person's paycheck to send a fixed amount to the joint account on payday, so no one has to remember.

Keep individual accounts too. Many couples use the joint account only for shared bills and keep personal spending separate. It reduces arguments, and it protects each person if the relationship ends.

Budget together. A shared budget, even a simple 50/30/20 split, makes the joint account easier to run. Some budgeting apps let both partners see the same budget.

What you'll need to apply

Both owners usually need:

  • a Social Security number
  • a government ID
  • a US address

The bank will usually check each person's ChexSystems report.

FAQ

Can we open a joint account if we aren't married? Yes. Any two adults can open a joint account: partners, roommates, or a parent and adult child.

How much of a joint account is insured? Each co-owner's share is FDIC-insured up to $250,000, so a two-person joint account is covered up to $500,000 at one bank.

Can we add a joint savings account later? Yes. Most banks let you add a joint savings account in the app once the joint checking is open. See compare savings accounts.
